Units and measurements for firewood/logs

The following units of measurement exist for firewood:

cubic meters (m³)

1 cubic meter is a unit of volume for round timber, i.e., unprocessed logs from felled trees.
1 solid cubic meter corresponds to 1 cubic meter (m³) of solid wood mass without gaps in the layering.

1 cubic meter (m³) corresponds to one cubic meter (m³) of stacked and cut firewood ready for the stove, including the spaces between the stacking.

cubic meter (m³)

A cubic meter of loose wood (m³) is the unit of measurement for a loosely piled quantity of wood. The logs fall in a random, unordered manner, creating larger gaps.

Proper storage of your firewood

What is the ideal moisture content or wood moisture level for firewood?

Firewood is best burned with a moisture content of approximately 20% (wood moisture content approximately 25%). Depending on storage conditions, this corresponds to a drying time of approximately one to two years.

Freshly cut wood typically has a moisture content between 50% and 60%. Excessive moisture in firewood often leads to increased pollutant emissions. Proper storage of the wood can not only reduce emissions but also significantly lower wood consumption.

Where is the right storage place for your firewood?

Ideally, the wood should be protected from ground moisture by maintaining a distance of ten to fifteen centimeters from the ground. A pallet placed on a stone or concrete base is a good option to prevent moisture from rising through your stack of wood.

If you are storing your wood along a wall, please note that a distance of ten to fifteen centimeters should be maintained to ensure optimal air circulation.

Furthermore, the top logs of the stack should ideally be covered with corrugated or trapezoidal sheet metal and weighted down with stones. This way, your woodpile is also protected from the elements from above.
